Many of our Fresno liposuction patients take care of themselves, working hard to eat right and exercise, but still find that those last few pounds won’t melt away or stubbornly remain in unsightly areas around the thighs or abdomen. Others are self-conscious about fat deposits around the neck or underneath the chin.
Liposuction surgery offers a solution for patients looking to resculpt unattractive areas where fat may form and linger. Liposuction is one of the most common cosmetic surgical procedures performed in the United States. Since its introduction in 1974, liposuction has undergone many changes and many surgeons have contributed to the refinement of the technique. There are very few risks associated with liposuction; recovery can be completed and the patient can return to work as quickly as two to three days.
Fat deposits become more difficult to remove successfully the longer they remain in your body, so if you are considering liposuction in Fresno – Visalia, it is important that you schedule a consultation today. Call our office at (559) 440-9025.
As with any surgery, there are risks to be weighed against the benefits. As a cosmetic surgeon in Fresno, Dr. Lopez prefers to outline the choices involved in the procedure, diagram the procedure, and then provide you with the known risks. This site will help you start to get educated about liposuction surgery so that you can make informed decisions regarding which procedures are right for you.
Candidates for Liposuction Surgery
It is important for any patient considering liposuction to understand that the procedure is not a cure for fat but rather just one component in a plan to minimize unsightly fat deposits. Patients who receive liposuction treatments but fail to alter their diet and exercise patterns will not see lasting results. The best candidates for liposuction are patients who watch their diet and exercise regularly but have deposits of fat that are usually genetically determined and want to resculpt their body. When considering liposuction surgery, patients need to ask whether they are willing to maintain their good eating and exercise habits, or whether they will be able to stick with a plan to break bad eating and exercise habits.
Patients also should consider whether use of the Erchonia Niera 4L™ Laser, newly offered by Dr. Lopez, is right for them. Laser-assisted liposuction can offer smoother results, less bruising, and decreased swelling following liposuction. Recovery times improve also when compared to traditional procedures. It is important to remember that liposuction is not about weight reduction. The primary goal of the liposuction procedure is to recontour and reshape the body. A patient’s body symmetry, musculature, and skin elasticity contribute to the cosmetic results. Patients who commit to diet, exercise, and a healthy lifestyle will have the best results.
The Liposuction Procedure
Liposuction surgery is performed in an outpatient setting using local anesthesia with mild sedation. All areas where liposuction will be performed are first infiltrated with a tumescent solution to desensitize the tissue under the skin. This usually takes between a half hour to an hour. If a patient has chosen laser-assisted liposuction using the Erchonia Niera 4L™ Laser, the laser treatment will be applied to loosen and liquefy the fat tissue that will be removed. Then tiny cannulas, or tubes, are inserted and the fat tissue is suctioned out. The areas are carefully sculpted to ensure even results; near the end of the procedure, the patient is asked to stand up to check for symmetry, and minute adjustments are made. After the procedure is completed, the patient will be placed in a compression garment, and pads will be used to help absorb any fluid that drains out during the first 24 to 36 hours. Most patients choose to take only over-the-counter pain relievers to minimize swelling and discomfort following liposuction. Recovery times vary, but in general patients must wear a compression garment for at least two to three days, and most patients feel better if it is worn for two to three weeks. Patients are encouraged to return to normal activities as quickly as possible following their liposuction surgery, and walking is encouraged the first day.
Results can be seen the next day after any fluid has drained and the skin shrinks back; however, swelling develops shortly after the procedure, and so it can take up to six weeks for a patient to see final results. Application of heat and massage is important to help break down the hardening that occurs under the skin and also to help decrease swelling that can occur in the legs.
