What is a Neuromodulator?

Botulinum toxin is a neuromodulator used in cosmetic medicine to relax muscles and reduce wrinkles. Injectable neuromodulators contain the neurotoxin Clostridium botulinum. When this toxin comes into contact with targeted muscles, it temporarily relaxes them. The relaxed muscles no longer pull at the skin, reducing the wrinkles that can form when the muscles are used. Botulinum toxin makes up many injectables including BOTOX, Dysport, Xeomin, and now Daxxify. Each is used for the same purpose, but research suggests that Daxxify’s more concentrated formula and makeup might lead to longer-lasting results. (1)

Why Daxxify Lasts Longer

Daxxify contains a protein called RTP004 that is designed specifically to assist the delivery of the active botulinum toxin to nerve cells when injected. Studies suggest that the addition of this protein allows the toxins to attach to nerves near the injection site, potentially elongating the effects of Daxxify. (2) This also allows the injectable to be stored at room temperature, and it is produced without the addition of any animal products. (3) 

The longer Daxxify is activated, the longer patients can go between treatments, saving them time and money. Since neuromodulators wear off over time, it can be hard to keep the results you desire for a long period. Preparation

To prepare for your treatment, please refrain from using blood thinners like aspirin and ibuprofen. Cut out topical steroids from your routine, as well as retinoids and fish oil supplements. If you take muscle relaxers, Dr. Lopez may advise you to avoid them for a few days before and after your treatment as they could alter the toxin’s effect.

Daxxify Procedure

Dr. Lopez starts the procedure by removing any makeup and debris from your face. She will map out the areas in which to insect during your consultation, taking care to address the areas in which you express concern. Dr. Lopez may apply a topical anesthetic before starting your injections, then she injects Daxxify with a very thin needle in the areas around the wrinkles and fine lines. Depending on your desired outcome, the procedure usually takes anywhere from 15 to 45 minutes to complete.

Recovery & Results

After your Daxxify injection, you may experience minimal or moderate pain near your injection site. There is potential for bruising, swelling, and possible allergic reactions since Daxxify uses proteins in its formula. To avoid migration of the injectable, try your best not to massage your face or lie flat. Avoid vigorous exercise for the first day, and do not utilize a sauna or hot tub until the following day. You may ice the injection site to relieve any discomfort. (1)

Typically by the second day, most patients notice Daxxify’s effects starting. The onset is quick compared to some other products, and your results are proven to last longer. You will be able to enjoy reduced frown lines for up to a year in some cases.

Dermal Fillers

When facial aging starts, one of the main symptoms people notice is a loss in volume and the start of fine line and wrinkle formation. Dermal fillers are injectables that usually contain hyaluronic acid gel, a substance found naturally in the body, making them biocompatible. When injected into the skin, dermal fillers spread into the creases of the face, reducing the appearance of wrinkles. Some fillers, like Restylane, bind to the water already present in the skin, remaining there for many months after treatment to continuously smooth wrinkles.

The dermal filler Radiesse is often used to stimulate the production of collagen, adding volume to the treatment areas. Made with microspheres in gel, this filler is composed of the material found naturally in our bones that promotes tissue regeneration and restructuring to fill wrinkles and lost volume in the face. It, like Daxxify, is extremely long-lasting, sometimes preserving results for over a year after treatment.

Microneedling

This popular skin rejuvenation treatment uses tiny needles to resurface the skin’s texture and tighten the overall appearance of the face. Microneedling requires Dr. Lopez to create microscopic wounds, triggering your natural healing response and the creation of new collagen and elastin. Non-surgical skin tightening is one of the most difficult requests from patients in cosmetic medicine, but microneedling offers skin retexturing with minimally invasive treatment plans. When the skin is prompted to create collagen, the surface naturally tightens and structures itself over time, providing results without going under the knife. It can be a great option for facial rejuvenation and pigmentation treatment.

FAQ

Is Daxxify the same as Botox?

Daxxify belongs to the same classification of injectables as Botox, but they are not the same. They have slightly different formulations, meaning the time until onset and how long they last may be different. Typically, it takes about two days to see the effects of Daxxify, whereas it can take up to four days to see the effects of Botox. Daxxify results typically last up to 6 months, whereas Botox results may last 3-4 months.

Can Daxxify be combined with other cosmetic treatments?

Yes, Daxxify can be combined with other treatments to achieve more comprehensive facial rejuvenation. It is often used in conjunction with dermal fillers, chemical peels, or laser treatments to address multiple concerns and achieve optimal results. 

Does Daxxify work on all skin tones?

Yes. Through rigorous research and patient studies, Daxxify has been tested on a wide array of skin tones and types. It is proven effective for all ages and genders.

Will I need the same number of units as my current frown line treatment?

No. For instance, if you have received 20 units of Botox in the past, you may receive 40 units of Daxxify to get the same amount of active ingredient in your treatment. Units do not directly associate with your dosage amount.
