Breast implants have been used for many years with an excellent safety record and are one of the most effective and common cosmetic surgeries performed today. In 2023, surgeons performed more than 304,000 breast augmentations to help patients enhance their breasts. Dr. Lopez can place the implants inside the breasts to add fullness, shape, and projection. Breast implants are silicone pockets that are either filled with a salt-water solution or soft gel depending on your aesthetic goals:

  • Saline: Saline implants consist of a silicone shell filled with a saline solution. Salt-water-filled implants can provide a smaller volume increase for patients who would like to augment their breasts. Since we fill the implants after placing them in the breast pocket, we can insert the implants through the areola or armpit with a smaller incision. Some patients, however, with a lower body mass index (BMI) may not be the best candidate for saline because there is a small risk of rippling.
  • Silicone: Silicone implants also have a similar shell but are filled with a soft gel that feels more like natural breast tissue. Silicone implants can provide a larger volume increase and do not have the risk of rippling.

For some patients, implants are more effective than a fat transfer – a procedure that removes excess fat from another area of your body and injects it into the breasts. Since your body can reabsorb fat, the results of a fat transfer are not always long-lasting. After a fat transfer, some patients are left with asymmetrical breasts and the reabsorption rate is between 37-80%. (2)

How to Prepare for Breast Implants

Breast Implant Procedure

Your anesthesiologist will administer anesthesia before the procedure. Once the anesthesia is working, Dr. Lopez will apply the predetermined incisions. She will guide the implants through the incisions and place them securely in the breast pocket. Dr. Lopez will place the implants above or below the pectoral muscle:

  • Below the pectoral muscle: This allows for the implant to act as a breast mound and prop up the natural breast tissue.
  • Above the pectoral muscle: She can place breast implants above the muscle when there is enough tissue to sufficiently cover the implant and still provide a natural appearance.

Dr. Lopez will close the incisions, and the surgical team will monitor you until you wake up. The whole surgery will take about two hours. Dr. Lopez can insert implants through the:

  • Armpit (axilla incision)
  • Breast crease (inframammary incision)
  • Areola (areolar or periareolar incision)

The inframammary incision is the most common technique used to place an implant, but Dr. Lopez decides which incision suits you best based on your body type. You will notice impressive results and how an enhanced chest accentuates your feminine curves.

Recovery

The key to a healthy recovery is to take it slow. Breast implant surgery requires at least one week of downtime. Get plenty of rest and do not push yourself.
